Ica, Peru, September 16, 2013 - The 30th South America Women's Championship begins today and will run until September 22. Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Venezuela and hosts Peru, will be fighting for one of two spots at the Women’s Volleyball World Championship that is scheduled to take place in Italy next year and the vacancy reserved for the continent at the World Grand Champions Cup that will take place in November this year in Japan.

The second vacancy at the 2014 Women's World Championship will be filled by the winner of the Confederacion Sudamericana de Voleibol (CV) Championship in October, comprising the four teams who placed second to fifth in the South America Women’s Championship.

Teams playing the South American Women's Championship are hoping to win a place at the Women's World Championships in Italy next year and the World Grand Champions Cup in Japan this November.
Brazil, winner of the last edition of the South American Women’s Championship in 2011, have already arrived in Ica as the title favourite. The team led by José ‘Zé Roberto’ Guimarães have taken part in the Championship 28 times having won 17 gold and 11 silver medals.  The only year Brazil did not take part in the Championship was in 1964.

Brazil’s 19 year old Gabi, one of the stars of the season, is excited to play her first South America Women's Championship with the senior team. "It's great to play again in Peru. It's my first time playing for the team, but I have taken part in many competitions in this country. The fans here are very passionate. They always fill the gym, which is great for volleyball. This is a very important tournament for us and we have come to earn our vacancies for the World Championship and the World Grand Champions Cup, "said Gabi.

Luis Linares, President of the Peruvian Federation (FPV), appealed to fans to come to the Coliseum to encourage the team: “We hope to have a successful tournament and Ica has proven it can organise events of this magnitude and we call on the fans to experience the excitement that this international event brings," said the chief executive of the FPV.

The Peruvian team coach was surprised by the large number of journalists on his team’s arrival into the country and expects there to be as much enthusiasm on the court. "Peru has always been strong in volleyball and we expect your support in the coliseum," said the Korean Hong-Sun Jin.

Team captain Vanessa Palacios spoke on behalf of her colleagues who hope to give fans what they are looking for.  "On behalf of all my colleagues, we appreciate the welcome and we are committed to earning victory by focusing on each game we play. We are motivated by the encouragement of the public who are expected to attend in large numbers."
